Echo Essentials North Bay Edition

A handy package
of curated news
and views.

‘Forever chemicals’ are in the news again.

The CBC did a piece this week about the City of North Bay and the Department of National Defence beginning a project this spring to ‘mitigate’ perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination at the airport property. It has also seeped into downstream private residence wells and Trout Lake, the city’s source of drinking water (as well as shoreline households drawing water directly from it.)

Next week, on Wednesday, March 27, there’s a public forum at the North Bay Public Library offering a PFAS primer.

Nipissing Wellness
is working to smooth
out health care wrinkles

How do we keep the doctors from burning out and how do we make sure patients are getting the care they deserve?

Wendy Clute-Smith joins Lisa Boivin on the 2NBWL podcast today to talk about how Nipissing Wellness, one of nearly 60 Ontario Health Teams in the province, fits into the provincial health care picture.

“The idea here is that all of those players (35 care providers and organizations in Nipissing) come together around a single virtual table and talk about how we can connect ourselves to be one seamless team,” she said, adding they are among 12 teams in Ontario picked to move forward to advance collaborative options for people.

“We have a really strong drive to have our primary care providers, which are both our physicians and our nurse practitioners and really engaged in the conversation because they’re the foundation of how we how we deliver care,” Wendy said, explaining how the old model that required doctors to be the single entry point for thousands of patients is driving new ones away.

Backroads Bill
talks adventure
with Adam Shoalts

adam shoaltz adventurer

Adam Shoalts joins the Backroads Bill podcast tomorrow morning to talk about his novel Alone Against the North and his journey that puts him in the running as one of Canada’s greatest explorers. He has led many expeditions including for the Royal Canadian Geological Society and has been listed as a best-selling author four times so far.

How did he become such an adventurer?

“I think it’s partly just a consequence of growing up in Canada,” Adam says. “I mean, I think a lot of kids all over Canada, whether you live in Ontario or B.C. or Newfoundland or indeed anywhere in between, we naturally gravitate towards the outdoors because we’re lucky enough to live in a country where we still have so many wild places and easy access to them in so much of the rest of the world, that’s not necessarily the case.”
