Vyshyvanka Day Motion:
WHEREAS:
on February 24, 2022, the Russian Federation launched a full-scale military invasion of Ukraine, seeking to destroy the Ukrainian state and identity and subjugate the Ukrainian people to Moscow’s rule;
WHEREAS:
Canada’s House of Commons recognized that the Russian Federation’s war in Ukraine as a genocide against Ukrainian people. This motion was adopted by the House of Commons unanimously; and
WHEREAS:
For centuries, the people of Ukraine sought and struggled to achieve an independent state all the while preserving their culture, language, and self-identity; and
WHEREAS:
The embroidered shirt, known as the vyshyvanka, has been a sacred emblem of Ukrainian culture, tradition and history since ancient times. Amidst ongoing war in Ukraine, the vyshyvanka serves as a reminder of the country’s rich history and traditions, and the resilience of its people in the face of adversity.
WHEREAS:
In Ukraine and around the world the third Thursday in May is marked as Vyshyvanka Day.
WHEREAS:
On Vyshyvanka Day, Ukrainians and friends of Ukraine around the world wear a Ukrainian embroidered shirt to show their support for the Ukrainian people and as a symbol of unity and solidarity.
WHEREAS:
Proud Ukrainian Canadians continue to make significant contributions to the cultural fabric of Canada while embracing their rich history and heritage, with which they share values of freedom, democracy, and the rule of law; and
NOW, THEREFORE:
We do hereby proclaim May 16, 2024, as Vyshyvanka Day and urge all citizens to join in commemorating this important day. On this day, let us recommit ourselves to helping the Ukrainian nation reclaim full sovereignty over its international borders and remember the heroines and heroes who sacrificed their lives to ensure freedom and happiness for future generations.
THEREFORE, IT BE RESOLVED:
That we proclaim May 16, 2024, as VYSHYVANKA DAY in the North Bay.
