North Bay Ukrainians and friends celebrated Ukraine’s Independence Day Saturday, Aug. 24 by joining hands for a symbolic human chain at 12 noon at the waterfront (near the Rotary Shelter).
It was part of an international symbolic gesture of unity on the country’s Independence Day as the Russian invasion of Ukraine continues (and now counter incursions) since starting in earnest Feb. 24, 2022 (although the 2014 annexation of Crimea was the beginning of the most recent assault).
The most significant and memorable action marking Ukraine’s Day of Unity took place on 21 January 1990, when anticipating the collapse of the USSR, Ukrainian patriots united to build a human chain between eastern and western Ukraine. This chain became a symbol of united Ukraine.
Ukraine’s Declaration of Independence took place Aug. 24, 1991.
They also shared kvass and Ukrainian cookies.
