The best OUA women’s hockey teams clashed in North Bay, Friday, Jan. 26 as the east division-leading Nipissing Lakers hosted the Guelph Gryphons, tops in the west.
Guelph was riding an 11-game winning streak and came out strong, out-shooting Nipissing 16-8 in the first frame.
Guelph’s Katelyn Dance drew first blood with a first-period goal unassisted at the 7:33 mark.
The Lakers’ Mallory Dominico converted on a Maggie McKee pass to even the score at 6:07 of the second frame, her 12th goal of the season. Madison Laberge got the second assist by bringing it over the blue line and lobbing it over Dominico to McKee on the left side.
A scoreless third forced an extra frame, which was marred by two disputed penalties to Dominico, giving Guelph two powerplays. Nipissing goalie Chantelle Sandquist held the fort through the first kill but frustration mounted with a non-call of a potential high stick on the puck right before the Gryphon’s Katherine Heard wristed a slot shot past through Sandquist’s arm and body.
Guelph outshot Nipissing 38-28 while the Lakers lost the penalty game 7-4.
Nipissing is challenged to shake it off the next day when they host the Brock Badgers Saturday, Jan. 27 at 5 p.m.
