How I painted Antelope Canyon using oil paints on canvas, starting with blocking in the painting and culminating with the modelling and detailing stage. This video covers painting in layers with oil paint, colour theory, using warm and cool colours to sculpt forms, and lighting your painting.
I absolutely LOVED painting this landscape piece and actually shed a tear or two when it was time for it to leave my studio and head to its forever home.
A note on how I prime, tone, and sand my canvases. I begin with professional grade gesso (I use Liquitex Professionals) and add a bit of water to thin it and some liquid acrylic paint to tone it. My favourite is yellow ochre, though any earth tone will work. Then, using a foam brush, I apply it to my canvas in thin layers, sanding in between each layer with a 220 to 320 grit sandpaper block. Doing this means that the canvas is smooth, and the tone means that I can read my colours more accurately since I am working off of a midtone instead of pure white.
