Our North Bay Echo YouTube channel is just two subscribers away from 200, which isn’t a bad milestone for a small market content creator … especially considering we only started feeding the channel with content on a regular basis this spring.
And we know people are watching with interest because we’re getting stopped on the street by people who tell us to keep up the good work and the online commentary is becoming more frequent.
Here’s a sample comment under a short 60-second clip about the “Consultant that didn’t consult the people impacted …”:
“I spent most of my career as an Environmental Consultant, so I did want to clear up what a consultant does. This clip is very funny and it clearly points to a major flaw in the study commissioned by DNSSAB. Clients contract consultants to provide expertise and direction on a particular topic.
“The fact that the study did limited outreach to the community, may be more a reflection of the directions for the study given by the client and not necessarily a reflection on the consultant. However, I think the message has been loud and clear that the community wants to be engaged in decisions that impact our community and not just informed after decisions are made.

Today’s Time Capsule
Is Coun. Jamie Lowery
too “independent”
to be effective?
This week’s Echo Essentials podcast is half banter between co-hosts Scott Clark and Dave Dale before bringing in seemingly-ostracized Coun. Jamie Lowery to discuss the progress and lack there of half-way into the four-year term.
Scott asks Dave about him stepping into a bit of Facebook “goo” while offering criticism about how a media release was republished by The Nugget as “submitted” without further attribution, unlike the credible job by BayToday staff, while also suggesting a news issue deserved more treatment by both.
As for Coun. Lowery, Scott asks why so many people don’t like dealing with him and Dave notes that his work as the chief executive officer of Casselholme Home for the Aged burned some bridges at the city. Meanwhile, Lowery said he considers himself an independent serving constituents and he’s not inclined to play the game of voting for a councillor’s motion to leverage a vote back in return.

A piece from Tuesday’s newsletter …
Pod the North‘s Kattie Laur features Scott Clark, of the North Bay Echo Community Podcast Network, in this week’s substack newsletter. The podcast itself will be released later this week in full to subscribers.
Excerpts below:
“Despite the loss of traditional local media, podcasts might actually be at the forefront of reviving local narratives. Earlier this year, CBC Podcasts launched their series’ of local podcasts, “This is…” and “Good Question” based in some of Canada’s more major cities like Montreal, Ottawa and Edmonton.
“In my opinion, it was the North Bay Echo Community Podcast Network that’s made the biggest splash and quite possibly the most interesting play in the North American podcasting landscape. And it’s especially significant for Canadian media. The network has 12 North Bay-focused podcasts, all embedding themselves into the everyday lives of North Bay locals, and building relationships with local journalists and media.
“I talked to Scott Clark, a 20-year broadcasting veteran, President of Clark Communications, and catalyst to North Bay Echo. The network is the start of an exiting shift the media landscape in northern Ontario — and possibly all of Canada. I asked Scott about building the network, it’s impact on the city, and how it might be changing the way we think about accessing local news.”
