Echo Essentials North Bay Edition

Jun 11, 2024

A handy package of curated
news and podcasts.

Local journalists published several noteworthy stories to start this week.

The Nugget followed up on the ‘State of Ontario’ address by Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli, which was delivered at the Grande Event Centre as part of the North Bay and District Chamber of Commerce speaking series: North Bay community is ‘fed up and wants action’ to deal with homelessness.

BayToday interviewed Fedeli about Canadore College’s planned Northern Ontario Addiction Treatment Centre of Excellence. The article, Fedeli promises update on Canadore’s delayed treatment centre, notes that the Ministry of Health and Canadore are not responding to requests for comment.

YourTV posted a video about Scoliosis Awareness Day, which took place Monday.

Today’s Golden Moment

Clark Communication’s Mykayla King and Ben Sargent made it all the way across Trout Lake before swamping their watercraft and pulling out of the 46th running of the Mattawa River Canoe Race, Saturday. See the record-setting race results HERE. Tune into the Backroads Bill podcast tomorrow to hear King and Sargent recount their adventure … with both eager to try the North Bay Mattawa Conservation Authority’s event again next year. (Sargent is the chief Echo Podcast producer and King contributes as office manager).

Green Fox Kitchen
helping meat-eaters
balance their diets

The Green Fox Kitchen was opened after two teachers turned their passion for cooking into a full time business. The goal is to provide healthy and delicious plant-based meals to people in North Bay.

Cheryl Brisson joins Lisa Boivin on the 2NBWL podcast to talk about her and her husband Mike’s journey from teachers to entrepreneurs (with a pre-order and pick-up service).

At one point, Lisa describes how she likes fish and eggs too much for veganism, noting she has no trouble catching and preparing fish (although cow and sow are a bit much for her butcher’s block). Cheryl patiently explained that some of their clients are meat-eaters too, and their delicious plant-based meals help balance their diets.

  • Where did the idea originate? 7:25
  • Lisa taste tests a vegan brownie 13:20

Mattawa River
Canoe Race spawns
soggy adventure tale

Ben Sargent and Mykayla King join tomorrow’s Backroads Bill podcast to share their experience about how the Mattawa Canoe Race went over the weekend. Neither had paddled a canoe in years, although they had teenage experience to draw on.

They discuss the new records that were set and how they managed to get across Trout Lake, the first 10 kilometres of the 64-km trek, but ended up in the drink while trying to disembark at the Stepping Stones dock for a stretch. Watch for a video of their adventure on our social media channels Wednesday afternoon.

Echo Essentials:

Coun. Mark King, chairman of the District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board, joins the Echo Essentials podcast to discuss the issue with hosts Scott Clark and Dave Dale. King doesn’t support a consultant’s report that recommended a “homeless hub” of such services within three blocks of the downtown area where many homeless, often with mental health and addiction issues, receive medical, pharmaceutical and other support services.

King said the experience of having the “warming centre” in a variety of locations these past few years informs his viewpoint. He said the negative consequences for those living nearby or operating businesses is substantial.
