Today’s Spotlight

The City of North Bay is raising the ‘Every Child Matters’ flag on Friday morning at Leger Square, a gesture to signal National Truth and Reconciliation Day coming up on Monday, Sept. 30. For the first time, the Anishinabek Nation, North Bay Indigenous Hub, and North Bay Indigenous Friendship Centre are coming together this Monday to honour Residential School Survivors and remember those lost. The opening ceremony at the Kiwanis Bandshell is set for 10 a.m., followed by a march to Amelia Park. Afterward, a shuttle bus will be available to transport participants to the Indigenous Hub at 1040 Brookes Street, where activities, food, and refreshments will continue. A sacred fire will be lit at the Hub at 9 a.m., and all are welcome to come and offer their prayers or make an offering throughout the day.

‘Kennedy Fall Fellowship’
more than weekend
with ‘the boys’

Tony Limina and Peter Rooney join the Echo Essentials podcast to talk about the Kennedy Fall Fellowship, a 62-year tradition where North Bay business owners and community leaders gather for a social event on the French River.

Co-host Scott Clark, who has attended several of the gatherings, references the positive benefits of the casual interactions between some of the most active movers and shakers in the city. Co-host Dave Dale reads several excerpts from WKP Kennedy’s book ‘North Bay’ that provides a chronological history of the community. The manuscript was delivered to the printer just days before his fatal heart attack, which took place while returning from the French River in the fall of 1961. They had just attached a plaque naming an island in WKP Kennedy’s honour.

Interviews with NDA
coaches and highlight
reel interception in
second Echo Sportscast

The upcoming Echo Sportscast #2 is packed with video highlights, interviews and commentary by co-hosts Paul McLean and Dave Dale, beginning with a high school junior football memory the Wright family will cherish … a pass interception returned 50 yards for a touchdown.

Watch for the show to be posted online Friday after lunch (because it’s a professional development ‘PD’ day) and we wanted to squeeze in the Thursday results.

Other Nipissing District Athletics coverage includes interviews with St. Joseph-Scollard Hall coaches David Wieggers (senior girls basketball) and Sylvie Laperriere (junior boys volleyball) after recording wins over Chippewa on Tuesday evening. That’s followed by a brief conversation with Trojans senior football coach Mark Robertson after the Bears ruined the West Ferris home turf celebration.

In the middle segment, the Sportscast puts a spotlight on this Saturday’s 3rd annual Baseball Day in the Bay with a clip of the interview with Jacob Brown, a local baseball product who serves as president of the men’s league and technical director for the NOHA. The full interview will be posted tomorrow as well.

That’s followed by a bit about the hockey showcase held at Pete Palangio Arena last weekend and Nipissing Lakers Homecoming games, with a focus on the men’s and women’s soccer teams that are on a roll to begin their seasons. The Heritage Moment is a brief clip of Maria Dominico accepting the Judge Harry J. Reynolds Memorial Award for Dedication to  Hockey. See the BayToday feature on her HERE.

It’s been a year since the Echo Community Podcasting Network launched in North Bay with the goal of amplifying community story-tellers, creating shows and complementing existing media with the credo: “Local voices should be heard.”

Since then we’ve produced more than 200 episodes of a variety of podcasts and 100 Echo Essentials newsletters reaching tens of thousands of listeners and viewers, beginning with the To North Bay With Love podcast hosted by Lisa Boivin.

Last week, founder Scott Clark and consulting partners Erin Trafford and Dave Trafford, of Story Studio Network, and Echo content director Dave Dale go over the highs and lows of an ever-evolving industry. We talk about how some of the assumptions we made were wrong, what pivots were necessary, the reality of the business and the big opportunities to come.

Echo Sportscast:

The inaugural Echo Sportscasts dropped last Friday morning with co-hosts Paul McLean and Dave Dale casting a weekly spotlight on high school, club and recreational sports.

The Frontline Presents: The NFL Eh?! S2, E3 – Tua Be Or Not Tua Be

Week 2 of the NFL season was an absolute disaster in many ways! Brooksee and Calvo hate football now as almost all of their fantasy pools and parlays bit the big one as the concept remains a moving target of which NFL teams are good and which ones are not.

The league remains a mystery and it’s even more clouded by the rash of injuries affecting so many of the game’s stars already in this young season. The boys also look into a few of the developing QB situations around the league and dive into a few of the key games from this past week as well as tee up a couple of games you all should have your peepers on in Week 3.

Last week made us hate football, maybe this week will make us love it again?! Stay with us!

EPISODE 57: Meet Jill, a dedicated advocate for holistic health and personal empowerment. Through her own journey of physical healing, Jill uncovered the profound influence of the mind on overall well-being, transitioning from feeling like a victim of circumstances to realizing her potential as a creator of her life.

Jill discovered and became immersed in Nonviolent Communication, integrating its principles into her roles as a teacher, counsellor, and family member. Making a Commercial, The Best Hitman Movie, & Is It a TRAP? (64)

“Trap” convinced Drew that M. Night Shyamalan could do a great comedy film. Before he watched the movie, a friend told Drew that it was a great “Hitman” film.

The ridiculous things our main character does to try and get away, fits the narrative of that video game franchise. Nick saw it as a highlight of Josh Hartnett’s renaissance.

PB thought the idea of the film was great. But all three boys agreed… it went all over the place near the end, and it was simply a music video for Saleka.

New episodes are available on Wednesdays.

A story about mistakes

Nancy Avery’s column in the new Fall Edition of the Back in the Bay Magazine tells a story of “… youthful mistakes, kindness and finally, redemption. A story of unlikely friendships over many years.”

In the video interview, she explains how Wayne Dietrich became a friend through interesting circumstances … he was a frustrated welfare recipient and met her on a bad day in her office as assistant to the Mayor of North Bay.

She also met local developer and restauranteur Jim Kolios at City Hall while she was in the clerk’s department. Somehow, by a stroke of luck, Wayne and Jim crossed paths and it was a life-changing happenstance.
