Today’s Spotlight
Getting answers
for constituents
is getting harder
Joining the Echo Essentials Podcast today is former North Bay deputy mayor and 16-year councilor Tanya Vrebosch, who expressed frustration about how the first half of this term is going.
Vrebosch first became a councilor in 2008 after placing 11th in the previous municipal election, but then filled a vacant seat mid-term. It was when Maureen Boldt, a paralegal, was removed from council after missing too many meetings while serving house arrest for the unauthorized practice of laws.
As one example, Vrebosch said council’s approval of subsidies for the Laurentian Ski Hill, using the city’s reserves last year and again this year, came without enough due diligence of the financial operations. She says her requests for information, and attempts to have the matter discussed as part of this year’s budget deliberations, have been disregarded.
Vrebosch finished seventh in the 2022 election after serving two terms as deputy mayor and another as chairwoman of engineering and works. She ran under the Liberal banner in the 2022 provincial election, placing third.

Canada’s bloodiest
labour conflict was
in Northern Ontario
The Reesor Siding Tragedy, a 1963 clash between unionized workers and contract farmers, is a somber lesson about how labour disputes can escalate in a quick and ugly fashion with three men killed and eight wounded.
Charles “Andy” Beaudoin, author of the novel ‘The Reesor Siding Tragedy: Canada’s Bloodiest Labour Conflict’, spent many years working in the forestry industry and studying union labour conflicts. He shares his experience researching the novel and also has an interesting connection as his brother was one of the police officers who was on site the night of the tragedy.

Paul McLean drops by the Echo Essential Podcast studio to talk about the resurgence of minor baseball in North Bay. The owner of Source for Sports describes how the newest iteration of the diamond sport offers a Panther ‘travel’ team system with a ‘local’ league foundation.
McLean, with his boy’s 9U team fresh off a provincial championship tournament experience in Sault Ste. Marie on Labour Day weekend, also shares how a mix of paid staff and volunteers are charting a new course for youth sports. And he describes the evolution of the well-founded ‘Hockey for Beginners’ program, which starts this weekend with involvement in the OHL North Bay Battalion’s preseason fan frenzy activities.
During the pre-interview banter, co-hosts Scott Clark and Dave Dale remember their very-limited sports experience as children and their involvement as parents.

There was an enthusiastic and prolonged standing ovation in a packed West Ferris Legion Br. 599 hall Saturday evening after Bill Parfitt, a 99-year-old Second World War veteran, was introduced before a ‘Raise the Roof’ fundraising dinner and dance.
The event raised just over $4,000, bolstered by additional contributions on Sunday, pushing the Legion over the $20,000 mark and passed the midpoint of the $40,000 campaign goal.
More than 100 people in attendance were told Parfitt, the patriarch of a long-time farming family in the Widdifield portion of North Bay, flew 24 missions as a tail gunner in Lancaster bombers over Europe. Parfitt said one of the last flights was for a food-aid drop over Holland after the Allies defeated Nazi Germany.
