Echo Essentials

Galaxies above
and beyond
our stars

Today’s 2NBWL podcast features the North Bay Astronomy Club as a timely lead in to the solar eclipse on Monday, April 8. The club is hosting a solar eclipse viewing event at the waterfront on Monday afternoon, in conjunction with the North Bay Food Bank. Bring a donation and safely view the rare celestial occurrence with the club providing protective eyewear, telescopes and other viewing devices.

What makes this solar eclipse so special? Is there life on other planets? What is the difference between astronomy and astrology? All these questions get answered … as well as insight into how they became interested in the skies above and stars beyond. You can also find stories about the club on BayToday and the Nugget’s post about the city’s fire service caution to the public to protect children.

  • Michelle and Dave talk about the stars 1:50
  • Astrology vs astronomy 8:30
  • Is there life on other planets? 15:00

How first lawyer
helped build
North Bay

Nestor Prisco

Nestor Prisco’s biography of Crown Attorney Arthur George Browning – North Bay Old Boy recounts the extraordinary man’s life while painting a colourful picture of this area’s foundational decades.

Today, Nestor joins Echo Essentials Podcast hosts Dave Dale and Scott Clark to describe why he decided to write the story and how it took parts of 15 years to pull together the bits and pieces necessary, including a stroke of luck finding one of Browning’s relatives (who just happened to be a professional editor).

Browning, North Bay’s first resident lawyer, arrives as many did, seizing on the opportunity presented by an expanding country riding steel rails west and north.

And what better author to tell the tale than Ontario’s last official working Sheriff (long retired), the inspiration of this monumental story-telling task taking seed during his time at the Nipissing District court house.

But the 219-page tome is about more than one person, it’s an adventure story spiced with political conflict and societal growing pains.

“In time he earned considerable stature, proving to be a steady hand at the centre of memorable battles consuming the aspirations of the villagers,” Nestor wrote, referencing in detail the victorious campaigns to achieve District and Town status, gritty resolve to promote the proposed Georgian Bay Canal and securing the southern terminal of Temiskaming and Northern Ontario Railway.

Today’s Zen Suggestion: Among the very rare absolute truths … you can’t claim to have an open and curious mind if you come to firm conclusions. The best you can come up with are temporary theories based on accumulated observations so far.
