Smells like
a great podcast
debate brewing
North Bay Coun. Mark King, chairman of the District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board, and Dave Mendicino, former councillor and DSSAB chairman, are not on the same page when it comes to a ‘Homeless Hub’ in the downtown area.
King, in this CBC interview late last month, was frigid about the recommendations stemming from a consultant’s report on the issue, noting they have already invested $13 million and four years to establish Northern Pines transitional and supportive housing … complete with a low-barrier shelter located away from the downtown for a reason. See the BayToday piece on the topic after tours were given to media members on Monday.
Mendicino, meanwhile, embraces the downtown-area location recommendation, along with Brent Kalinowski, Community Safety and Well-Being Coordinator. They say the homeless, specifically those who have substance addictions and other mental health issues, gravitate to the downtown area where support services and medical clinics are located. You can learn more about the context of the issue in this Small Town Times podcast.
Perhaps we should have the two of them in the same studio and learn more about why they have different perspectives?
