Echo Essentials:
Scott McLeod Shabogesic is featured in last week’s Echo Essentials podcast to talk about his nine-year tenure as chief of Nipissing First Nation, his future and specific challenges his community has overcome and continues to face.
One of the primary topics covered was how the Robinson Huron Treaty Annuity lawsuit and subsequent court rulings and settlement divided many of the 21 communities involved.
Scott describes how the process unfolded, explains 1850 Treaty history, the split between the community as a whole and individuals, and how he advocated for a larger portion to go to the future of the community.
Scott said it was a factor in losing the election, especially with cheques not going out until after the votes were counted, but says new Chief Cathy Bellefeuille was a good choice to replace him.
In the pre-interview banter between co-hosts Scott Clark and Dave Dale, it’s noted that at least one viewer is starting to like Dave more now than when he was writing salty columns for BayToday and The Nugget. See the YouTube short HERE.

Back in the Bay Magazine was delighted to finally get Bill White in the North Bay Echo studio to talk about his lengthy entrepreneurial resume, which includes a host of different businesses over eight decades in North Bay, as well as highlighting his busy schedule of volunteering and community involvement.
He started out with one of the largest Nugget paper routes and worked in several local stores before toiling for four years in the SAGE underground complex, followed by several companies, some lasting longer than others. The most successful was the Bay Pressure and Cleaning Services.
North Bay Ukrainians and friends celebrated Ukraine’s Independence Day Saturday, Aug. 24 by joining hands for a symbolic human chain at 12 noon at the waterfront (near the Rotary Shelter).
It was part of an international symbolic gesture of unity on the country’s Independence Day as the Russian invasion of Ukraine continues (and now counter incursions) since starting in earnest Feb. 24, 2022 (although the 2014 annexation of Crimea was the beginning of the most recent assault).
The most significant and memorable action marking Ukraine’s Day of Unity took place on 21 January 1990, when anticipating the collapse of the USSR, Ukrainian patriots united to build a human chain between eastern and western Ukraine. This chain became a symbol of united Ukraine. Ukraine’s Declaration of Independence took place Aug. 24, 1991. They also shared kvass and Ukrainian cookies.

From last week’s newsletter …
The “radioactive” abandoned Nova Beaucage Mine, which was located on Newman Island in the Manitou chain on Lake Nipissing during the 1950s, was in the news this week.
Village Media published a story via BayToday: Alarmed residents demand halt to radioactive waste storage plan
You can read about the soil remediation program via a notice on the Nipissing First Nation website:
For more background, see a 60-page report written in 1956 about the Beaucage Mine Property.
In other contamination news, Health Canada dropped its revised “objective” for PFAS in drinking water Aug. 9 … which will likely lead to the Province of Ontario changing its treatment requirements for cities such as North Bay. Watch for more local coverage soon, but until then, check out two of our podcasts on the subject, one before the city’s open house HERE and after the public meeting HERE.
