The “radioactive” abandoned Nova Beaucage Mine, which was located on Newman Island in the Manitou chain on Lake Nipissing during the 1950s, was in the news this week.
Village Media published a story via BayToday: Alarmed residents demand halt to radioactive waste storage plan
You can read about the soil remediation program via a notice on the Nipissing First Nation website:
For more background, see a 60-page report written in 1956 about the Beaucage Mine Property.
In other contamination news, Health Canada dropped its revised “objective” for PFAS in drinking water Aug. 9 … which will likely lead to the Province of Ontario changing its treatment requirements for cities such as North Bay. Watch for more local coverage soon, but until then, check out two of our podcasts on the subject, one before the city’s open house HERE and after the public meeting HERE.

Today’s Spotlight
Former Nipissing
chief advocated for
larger community share
of treaty annuity settlement
Scott McLeod Shabogesic is featured in today’s Echo Essentials podcast to talk about his nine-year tenure as chief of Nipissing First Nation, his future and specific challenges his community has overcome and continues to face.
One of the primary topics covered was how the Robinson Huron Treaty Annuity lawsuit and subsequent court rulings and settlement divided many of the 21 communities involved.
Scott describes how the process unfolded, explains 1850 Treaty history, the split between the community as a whole and individuals, and how he advocated for a larger portion to go to the future of the community.
Scott said it was a factor in losing the election, especially with cheques not going out until after the votes were counted, but says new Chief Cathy Bellefeuille was a good choice to replace him.
In the pre-interview banter between co-hosts Scott Clark and Dave Dale, it’s noted that at least one viewer is starting to like Dave more now than when he was writing salty columns for BayToday and The Nugget. See the YouTube short HERE.

If you’re honest and follow your heart, those around you will do the same … or they’ll take their lies somewhere else.

This ‘Between 2 Daves’ episode via Small Town Times includes discussion about the District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board and the potential location of a proposed ‘Homeless Hub’ (which would likely include a soup kitchen, warming place and low barrier shelter, as well as other social, mental health and addiction supports.)
The discussion also reviews some of the Casselholme (long-term care) and Castle Arms (senior living) political history that may have built the foundation of Coun. Jamie Lowery’s position as a seemingly-ostracized elected official (the guest and subject of an Echo Essentials podcast released the day after this podcast was recorded).
Editor’s Note: It’s worth pointing out that Dave Mendicino’s contention about the change in governance for Castle Arms, that it was not done democratically, is ironic … considering that Lowery, Coun. Mark King and Coun. Chris Mayne were all elected into office afterward … while he was not.
If you visit Dave Dale’s Small Town Times YouTube channel, there are a number of comments about the latest podcast.

From Tuesday’s newsletter …
The plight of homeless in North Bay follows a pattern, according to recent media coverage sparked by the cuts in service and layoffs of staff at The Gathering Place soup kitchen. One trend is that people come here for addiction treatment but find insufficient supports and few options for accommodations after they are released.
See The Nugget stories HERE and HERE with comments from soup kitchen dependents (many whom are precariously housed but lacking funds for food) as well as those who are unhoused, including tent occupants on a Sherbrooke Street property.
Meanwhile, the Davedi Club hosted a fundraiser on the weekend that put more than $11,000 into The Gathering Place’s financially-challenged coffers. The new board chairman, Peter Gregory, says they over-extended themselves trying to fill so many gaps in the social safety net.
There’s also Village Media’s Trillium Talk as municipalities gather in Toronto to discuss this issue, among others, with provincial legislators. In addition, there’s a TVO opinion piece worth reading on the matter.
