There’s still a chance to see the recent display of Northern Lights this evening between 8 and 11 p.m. The full moon might tone it down a bit but there have been some amazing Aurora Borealis witnessed by local residents the past couple of nights due to a solar flare on the weekend.

Health Canada has lowered the acceptable limit for PFAS in drinking water, leaving the City of North Bay’s water quality outside the safe range, however the Province of Ontario sets safety regulations and that hasn’t happened yet. See the BayToday story HERE.
The Echo Community Podcast Network has produced several podcasts on the PFAS subject:
- ‘Forever chemical’ questions remain after PFAS open house in North Bay
- North Bay’s role in PFAS clean up outlined
- Should North Bay be worried about PFAS in the water?

Bear sightings are through the roof in North Bay and area, according to a media report HERE and multiple local social media postings. The bruins are trying to fatten up for their winter snooze but it hasn’t been a great year for berries and nuts in the bush, so they are going for household waste and birdfeeders to take the edge off.

Part 1: Battle
against fakes and
asset defamation
Cory Dingle, executive director of the Norval Morrisseau Estate, joins the podcast tomorrow morning in this two-part series to shine light on why it’s so hard to prosecute and deal with fake paintings and how they are fighting to change the way art fraud is handled by Canadian law.
Norval Morrisseau was a renowned Indigenous painter from Northwestern Ontario who was described as the “Picasso of the North” by the French press. For decades his estate has tried to stop the fake paintings that have flooded the market however their hands were tied by Canadian Legislation.

Joining the Echo Essentials Podcast is former North Bay deputy mayor and 16-year councilor Tanya Vrebosch, who expressed frustration about how the first half of this term is going.
Vrebosch first became a councilor in 2008 after placing 11th in the previous municipal election, but then filled a vacant seat mid-term. It was when Maureen Boldt, a paralegal, was removed from council after missing too many meetings while serving house arrest for the unauthorized practice of laws.
As one example, Vrebosch said council’s approval of subsidies for the Laurentian Ski Hill, using the city’s reserves last year and again this year, came without enough due diligence of the financial operations. She says her requests for information, and attempts to have the matter discussed as part of this year’s budget deliberations, have been disregarded.
Vrebosch finished seventh in the 2022 election after serving two terms as deputy mayor and another as chairwoman of engineering and works. She ran under the Liberal banner in the 2022 provincial election, placing third.

Backroads Bill:
The Reesor Siding Tragedy, a 1963 clash between unionized workers and contract farmers, is a somber lesson about how labour disputes can escalate in a quick and ugly fashion with three men killed and eight wounded.
Charles “Andy” Beaudoin, author of the novel ‘The Reesor Siding Tragedy: Canada’s Bloodiest Labour Conflict’, spent many years working in the forestry industry and studying union labour conflicts. He shares his experience researching the novel and also has an interesting connection as his brother was one of the police officers who was on site the night of the tragedy.
