The Ferris Business Network is preparing to announce the winner of its Lake Nipissing Ice Off contest. Interestingly, four out of five people who picked April 6 (The Nugget’s official declaration this year) through the electronic ballot at www.ferristheplacetobe.com got the skill testing question wrong.
What’s your answer to: 5+4-3×2 = ? Overall, it looks like 70% of the entries had the incorrect answer, which is amazing in a world where Google and calculators are at our fingertips. Time for either better math education or an easier question.
It’s probably not the only controversial issue because the weather hampered pilot attempts to assess the ice situation last week, with one pilot suggesting in the story the lake was likely free of ice as early as April 4 … one day after the record was set April 3, 1945.

Backroads Bill
saw the signs
for early spring
Backroads Bill joins the To North Bay With Love show for the second time as he phones in from the Canadian Ecology Centre to talk about how seasonal weather can be predicted by watching nature.
He talks about the signs he saw foretelling a light winter and early spring and what that means for outdoor activities this year. In classic Bill Steer fashion, the conversation goes from talking about forest fires and changing climate to birds to paranormal activity.

BayToday reports
about a toxic
workplace
Just in time for the evening news, BayToday’s Jeff Turl breaks a story about the North Bay Mattawa Conservation Authority having a toxic workplace.
“Staff-management relations at the North Bay Mattawa Conservation Authority are so bad staff are ready to walk off the job at any moment to protest an extremely toxic workplace environment. In fact, the Authority’s own Human Resources Director Mark Bremer says it’s the worst he’s seen in 30-plus years working in the industry,” begins the article.

Echo Essentials:
Last week, Nestor Prisco joined Echo Essentials Podcast hosts Dave Dale and Scott Clark to describe why he decided to write the biography of Crown Attorney Arthur George Browning – North Bay Old Boy. He explains how it took parts of 15 years to pull together the bits and pieces necessary, including a stroke of luck finding one of Browning’s relatives (who just happened to be a professional editor).
And what better author to tell the tale of North Bay’s first resident lawyer than Ontario’s last official working Sheriff (long retired), the inspiration of this monumental story-telling task taking seed during his time at the Nipissing District court house.
