As many as 50 people meet twice a week during the summer to swim sections at a time to circumvent Trout Lake. Called the Tour de Trout, it’s grown to be an effective fundraiser supporting the North Bay YMCA’s Strong Kids Campaign, which pays memberships for qualifying children and youth. On Monday, organizer Johanne Brousseau was awarded the YMCA’s Peace Medal for her efforts. Brousseau grew up at the Y and became a lifeguard and instructor for local beaches, as well as SCUBA diver. Brousseau was a mayoral candidate one year ago after serving a four-year term as the community services chairperson. A second video interview will be released in a couple days that covers political commentary as Brousseau has been attending all the council meetings since losing the mayoral race to Peter Chirico, albeit with a tight margin of less than 5 per cent.
